In motorcycles, cc means cubic centimeters, a unit used to describe engine displacement. A 500 cc motorcycle has an engine whose cylinders displace about 500 cubic centimeters of air-and-fuel volume through a complete piston cycle. Displacement helps indicate engine size, but it does not directly reveal horsepower, top speed, or overall performance.
For a piston engine, displacement depends on cylinder bore, piston stroke, and the number of cylinders. Bore is the internal diameter of the cylinder, while stroke is the distance the piston travels.
A larger bore or longer stroke increases the volume displaced by each cylinder. Multiplying that volume by the number of cylinders gives the engine’s total displacement.
Two motorcycles can have the same cc rating while behaving very differently. One may use a single-cylinder engine designed for low-speed torque, while another uses several cylinders and produces power at much higher engine speed.
Engine displacement gives a general indication of the engine’s physical capacity. Larger engines often produce more torque and may carry greater loads or maintain highway speeds more comfortably.
Small-displacement motorcycles are commonly lighter, more economical, and easier for urban riding. Mid-displacement bikes can balance manageable weight with touring or highway ability. Large-displacement machines may provide stronger acceleration but can also be heavier and more demanding.
These are broad patterns rather than fixed rules. Engine design, tuning, gearing, weight, aerodynamics, and electronics can cause substantial differences within the same cc category.
A cc number does not tell buyers:

Fuel consumption
Motorcycle weight
Engine configuration
Cooling system
Gear ratios
Emission performance
Rider suitability
A turbocharged or supercharged engine may produce much more power than a naturally aspirated engine of similar displacement. An electric motorcycle has no engine displacement at all, yet it may accelerate faster than many petrol motorcycles.
Riders should therefore compare complete specifications rather than ranking motorcycles only by cc.
Engine displacement influences exhaust-gas volume, but a muffler cannot be matched by cc alone. Cylinder number, firing order, header layout, pipe diameter, sensor location, engine tuning, and intended operating range all matter.
A universal 51 mm motorcycle muffler describes the inlet connection size, not the engine displacement it automatically suits. The motorcycle may still require a compatible link pipe, bracket, reducer, or tuning adjustment.
A very large or unrestricted pipe is not always better for a larger engine. Pipe velocity and exhaust pulse behavior affect performance across the rpm range. An unsuitable design may reduce low- or mid-range response even when it creates a louder sound.

Bracket and mounting position
